M4 Documentation:

This step and its two parallel counterparts each select one of the three groups of customers considered for mining (see also the documentation of step 'MarkRelevantMonths'). Each of these three groups is processed in the same way in the few following steps, but the processing has to be done separately because the data could overlap. For example, a particular month could be the first month of the six-months period of the first customer group, and the fourth month of the period of another customer group. The steps following this step ('SelectPeriod1/2/3', 'MarkPeriod1/2/3', 'CreateAbstractMonth1/2/3') give an abstract number, 1 to 6, to the six months of the three periods. Further a marker for each period is added to the data set. Afterwards the three groups of customer data sets are unified again (step 'UnionOfPeriods'). The abstract month number is then used in further steps to address the months of the three periods in a uniform way.
